Hiking & Biking in the NH Lakes Region
The Lakes Region is a wonderful place for walking and hiking! One of the most popular trails in the Lakes Region is Mt. Major. Enjoy the fantastic views of the lake from rocky flattop, elevation of about 1,100 feet to the 1746’ summit. The summit offers panoramic views of the entire Lakes Region! Mt. Major is located 7 miles south of Ellacoya State Park.
Castle in the Clouds trails offer 28 miles of hiking trails that are maintained by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. Horseback Riding is also a big favorite! Stroll along the cascading waterfalls or enjoy the spectacular views of the Ossipee Mountains. When you are done exploring, stop by the Café in the Clouds for some Kellerhaus ice cream, pizza, wraps and a soft pretzel! Visit their website for more information. Locks Hill offers a trail loop with beautiful places to stop and enjoy a picnic while enjoying the scenery. This is an easier trail and great for beginners.
Gunstock Mountain has several trails. Pick up a trail map at their camp store. These trails are good for the intermediate hiker. Ridge Trail has a distance to the summit of 2.43 miles which will take approximately 2 ½ hours. Brook Trail is 1.65 miles to the summer and will take approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete.
